Virginia 40 - Roanoke 29

Comments:

First match of the season for both sides, with Virginia
looking the better of the two by far. Flyhalf Rob Christian
turned in another solid performance but the story was in the
pack where Virginia dominated in the loose. Led by no. 8
Jeff Hollier and prop Ian Mills the Virginia forwards were
at the breakdowns in numbers and running effective crash ball
from the clean ball they generated there.
For Roanoke, it was a strange reversal of the club's
historical strengths. The stronger packs that have been fielded
in the past were not in evidence but fierce tackling in the
backline and some sterling movements featuring OC Mike Norton
and FB Don Fisher might bode well for the boys in black.
