April 28, Richmond, VA:

In the MARFU Division II final, Media RFC (#5 seed) defeated
Severn River (#2 seed) to become the 1996 MARFU Division II
champions. The final match, like the semi-finals, was
played in excellent conditions -- warm and sunny with little
wind.

Media flyhalf Steve Camp scored the first try of the finals,
as he did in the semi-finals, in the first five minutes
of play. Although unconverted, Media scored one converted
try to bring the score to 12-0. Severn River responded
forcefully with two converted tries by Severn River
captain and Eagle flanker John Holtzmann and a penalty
goal. This brought the haltime score to 17-12 in favor of
Severn River.

Media overcame this deficit, however, with a converted
try and penalty goal early in the second half. This brought
the score to 22-17 in favor of Media with 20 minutes left.
Media then successfully held off numerous attacks by a
talented Severn River back line before scoring one final
converted try to bring the final score to 29-17 in favor
of Media.

Media now advances to Hartford for the first round of
Nationals on May 11-12 as the #1 team from MARFU.
Severn River advances to San Francisco for the first round
of Nationals on May 11-12 as the #2 team from MARFU.

Chris Cahill, Media's lock-forward, was voted the tournament
MVP, amassing 5 tries in 4 games and winning countless
balls at lineout time. Congratulations, Chris!
